“The View” Vs. “The Talk” - Daytime TV Rivalry

 With the new daytime talk show 'The Talk' in full swing, it makes sense that people are comparing it to 'The View'. Both are hosted by a group of ladies with divergent and sometimes radical opinions, but 'The Talk' focuses mostly on issues that Moms face every day like bullying in schools and when it is right to give your kids the sex talk.. It will be interesting to see which comes out ahead eventually.

Daytime TV Battle Of “The View” Vs. “The Talk”

Everyone has an opinion about one of daytime’s most successful talk shows, ABC's “The View.”

Some call it a daily yelling match with five women talking over one another nonstop. Others consider it, for better or worse, a democrat love fest minus Elisabeth Hasselbeck."

Whatever your perception is, “The View” has proven to get people talking and be a ratings winner.
For the longest time, competing networks have failed to present a program similar to “The View” with five women talking about hot-button issues and interviewing famous newsmakers- until now.

With the near death of soap operas, CBS has prepared themselves and rolled out a new daily talk show titled “The Talk,” which has the potential to be a very successful program.

Now in its second week of shows, “The Talk” is trying to establish their identity and find out what works best for the largest audience.

In the first episode, the hosts (who are all mothers) including USC Annenberg alum Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne, Holly Robinson Peete, Leah Remini and “Mom on the Street” reporter Marissa Jaret Winokur discussed the intentions of the show.

In comparison to “The View,” this show will focus most on moms and stories from a mom’s point of view.
Some subjects already discussed include the recent “Glee” photo scandal, bullying in schools and when it is right to give your kids the sex talk.

I was fortune enough to attend a taping of “The Talk” this week and realized the show could be the next big thing in daytime.

Unlike “The View,” each host listens to the other and tries their best to not talk over one another.

The initial guests have included A-listers such as Christie Brinkley, Jennifer Lopez, Judge Judy and Hilary Swank.

Most importantly, the show’s main subject is moms and who is watching daytime television everyday…. Moms!

Granted, like any new show, there could be improvements. Some topics like focusing on “the terrible twos” could be uninteresting to viewers who don’t have any kids near that age.

Some hosts talked much more than others and I wanted to hear more of a group conversation with more opinions.

I watched this premiere and have to admit I thoroughly enjoyed it. CBS launched The Talk today, an all-female round table that brings very different women together to discuss news topics and personal items. So, while the ladies of the new talk show stir up controversy with the items of the day, let’s kick it up on the beauty front: which lady had the Best Beauty Look? Vote now!

First up is Julie Chen, with more of a traditional anchorwoman look (amplified blowout, defined cat-eye makeup) but the look is tousled and softer for this venture, paired with a glossy pink lip. Totally pretty.

ea Remini was her normal outspoken self with a smoky daytime eye, lots of long lashes and a coral lipstick. Can’t really say I love the lipstick color but Lea looks gorgeous as usual.
Sharon Osbourne was rocking her signature look: cropped cherry red hair, pale skin and a glossy lips. Dressed head to foot in black. I adore Sharon Osbourne.
Holly Robinson-Peete worked her signature caramel-brown curly hair, lots of lashes and an extra glossy lip. Looking great, Holly!
Finally, we have what could be the game changer: Sara Gilbert, who looked GORGEOUS on camera today? Fresh makeup, glowing skin – this is a whole new look for the actress and it is WORKING for her.

Marissa Jaret Winokur Is Ready For a New View on 'The Talk

On October 18, six celebrity moms -- Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Marissa Jaret Winokur, Sharon Osbourne, Leah Remini, and Holly Robinson Peete -- will take on the five babes of ABC's The View (led by TV news veteran Barbara Walters) in a new daily talk show on CBS that is aimed largely at the interests and angsts of modern-day parents. The new show is aptly named The Talk.

Parade.com caught up with Marissa Jaret Winokur -- who, until now, was best known as the Tony Award-winning actress/singer from Hairspray, a popular contestant on Season 6 of Dancing With the Stars, and, most recently, the host of Oxygen’s Dance Your Ass Off.


Six high-profile women sharing one stage. Some would call that a recipe for disaster. Will any of you have a special beat?
 
"I'm regularly going out in the field like a correspondent, but I hate using that word. I'll be talking with parents on the street, in the park, in a coffee shop, asking them about, you know, real things, getting the hands-on stuff from moms and the dads. I like to say it this way: 'I walk The Talk.'"

So your segments will be similar to "Jaywalking," Jay Leno's comic man-in-the-street interviews?
 
"Well, my segments will definitely have that feel. But I'm going to have a lot more heart and a lot more acceptance. I'm not going out on the street to make people look stupid. I'm going out to have a good time with them and learn from them. They won't have to say, 'Oh, no! Here she comes! She's going to turn this around to make me look like an ass!' I'm not doing any slander TV. I never will. I really feel that, right now, there's a place for this show in people's lives."

Taking on The View takes guts. Other than emphasizing issues of interest to parents, won't this essentially be just another talk show with celebrities?
 
"Our emphasis will be on what is important to moms and dads, but also are going to have people in the news, authors, experts, etc. There will be a lot of segments on healthy food. There also will be personal, at-home footage of us with our own families. And speaking for myself, I am not so obsessed with celebrity. I am so much more impressed with the woman who has five kids. How does she do it? My mom had four kids -- how is she alive?! Sometimes, I can't handle life with just one kid! Also, I've heard enough from celebrity moms who say, 'I do it by myself.'

No we don't! We have help. Of course, we have help! How would we work all the time if we didn't have help? On The Talk, I want to show real parents doing real things. I'm as real as it comes when it comes to being a parent. I know the stress that I have as a parent -- meanwhile, I have a husband, and help with my son, and a career, and money. I don't know how people do it with less. I don't know how a teenage mom does it at all.

Daytime Soap Opera Ladies Get New Daytime Talk Show!

As The World Turns, longest-running soap opera  has ended. It featured Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Holly Robinson Peete, Marissa Jaret Winokur, and Leah Remini. It was a great favorite for many many fans - but times change. Today is the era of the talk Show and yes, that show is being replaced by a daytime talk show "The Talk", which features Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne, Holly Robinson Peete, Leah Remini and Marissa Jaret Winokur. The network has immediately given a new job to their soap opera ladies and added Sharon Osborne to the mix.  Pretty neat!

As The World Turns Last Episode Airs on TV: Longest Running Soap Opera Ends – As The World Turns is perhaps the longest running soap opera on television. The show runs for 54 years until it airs it’s last episode entitled, “The World Stops Turning.”

This is the second soap opera that CBS has canceled in two year and the main reason seen is money of course. As The World Turns features Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Holly Robinson Peete, Marissa Jaret Winokur, and Leah Remin.

ATWT premiered in 1956 with the legendary Helen Wagner as Nancy Hughes utterd those infamous words “ Good Morning Dear”. If you haven’t seen As The World Turns last episode, perhaps it will be a good thing to watch it and see how 54 years of the series ends. Is it a good ending or was it rushed due to the cancellation of contract?

The last installment aired this afternoon and was filled with closure. Doctor Bob Hughes (Don Hastings) retired from the hospital , Barbara (Colleen Zenk) dissolved her partnership with Paul (Roger Howarth), Casey (Billy Magnussen) left for law school, Chris (Daniel Cosgrove) proposed to Katie (Terri Colombino), Lucinda (Elizabeth Hubbard) and John (Larry Bryggman) got back together, and Janet (Julie Pinson) asked Jack (Michael Park) to be Lorenzo’s godfather.
It seemed like everyone’s storyline was wrapped up in some way, except for Luke (Van Hansis). As fans are well aware, he lost Reid (Eric Sheffer Stevens) last week and yesterday, said goodbye to Noah (Jake Silbermann). The closest he got was to be able to use Reid’s stethoscope to listen to Reid’s heart, now pumping in Chris’ body.

Websites like SheWired.com are making a bug deal about the fact that Sara Gilbert is gay, but it seems to me that the show is trying to showcase a diverse group of "Moms" for this talk show. Frankly, I think they did just that!

The network published a press release announcing a new talk show featuring many female power players, including Sara Gilbert, who played Darlene on Roseanne.

The press release features a brief list of each woman's credentials and background information about the women's families. While the profiles of other members in the cast acknowledge husbands, Sara Gilbert's profile simply says she lives with 'her family in Los Angeles.'

It seems odd the press release did not say Gilbert lives with her partner, especially since Gilbert is an out lesbian who is raising children with her partner Allison Adler.

Although this seems to be a small oversight, it speaks volumes. Each woman's profile reads exactly the same, saying they live with husbands, even going as far as naming each woman's spouse.

The show also features Marissa Jane Winokur, Sharon Osbourne, Holly Peete Robinson and Leah Remini.

And while there may be a few people who don't know that Osbourne's spouse goes by Ozzy, I doubt it.

Hey CBS: minor omissions have large connotations. If CBS wants to promote diverse programming, then the company should promote diversity in its own press releases.
